Truth Unveiled By Time (Bernini)
''Truth Unveiled by Time'' is a marble sculpture by Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the foremost sculptors of the Italian Baroque. Executed between 1645 and 1652, Bernini intended to show ''Truth'' allegorically as a naked young woman being unveiled by a figure of ''Time'' above her, but the figure of ''Time'' was never executed. Historical background Upon his election to the papacy in 1623, Maffeo Vincenzo Barberini took the name Pope Urban VIII and appointed Bernini as the principal artist for the papal court in Rome. Gian Lorenzo Bernini
Gian Lorenzo (or Gianlorenzo) Bernini (, ; ; Italian Giovanni Lorenzo; 7 December 1598 – 28 November 1680) was an Italians, Italian sculptor and Italian architect, architect. While a major figure in the world of architecture, he was more prominently the leading sculptor of his age, credited with creating the Baroque sculpture, Baroque style of sculpture. As one scholar has commented, "What Shakespeare is to drama, Bernini may be to sculpture: the first pan-European sculptor whose name is instantaneously identifiable with a particular manner and vision, and whose influence was inordinately powerful ..." Giovanni Domenico Cerrini (1609–1681), also called ''Gian Domenico Cerrini'' or ''il Cavalier Perugino'', was a painter of the Baroque period, born in Perugia Perugia ( , ; ; ) is the capital city of Umbria in central Italy, crossed by the River Tiber. Sebastiano Ricci
Sebastiano Ricci (1 August 165915 May 1734) was an Italian Baroque painter of the late Baroque period in Venetian painting. About the same age as Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, Piazzetta, and an elder contemporary of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Tiepolo, he represents a late version of the vigorous and luminous Pietro da Cortona, Cortonesque style of grand manner fresco painting. He was the uncle of Marco Ricci (1676 – 1730), who trained with him, and became an innovator in landscape painting. Early years He was born in Belluno, the son of Andreana and Livio Ricci. In 1671, he was apprenticed to Federico Cervelli of Venice. Others claim Ricci's first master was Sebastiano Mazzoni. Indiscretion at a young age in 1678 resulted in an unintended pregnancy and, later, a bigger scandal when Ricci was charged with trying to poison the young woman in question to avoid marriage. Time Unveiling Truth (Tiepolo)
''Time Unveiling Truth'' is a painting c. 1745–1750 by the Italian painter Tiepolo. It is now on display in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in Boston, Massachusetts. Father Time is shown on a chariot with a scythe uncovering the body of a female figure of Truth. The work remained in Verona until the 19th century, when it was transferred to Paris and resold several times, until it was bought by Rudolph Heinemann in 1960, who took it to New York. In 1961, it was sold to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where the work remains today. Provenance It was sold by Rudolph J. Heinemann to the Museum of Fine Arts of Boston for $210,000, on December 13, 1961.
